News That Matters

The end isn’t near. It is here.

  • It can take over 9 hours for caffeine levels in your bloodstream to decrease by half.
  • A typical 8-ounce cuppa has 95 milligrams of caffeine.
  • The USDA strongly advises humans ingest no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day.
  • A grande Starbucks Pike Place blend pours a whopping 310 mg.
  • Too much caffeine can make you feel hyper-alert, jittery, anxious, paranoid . . .

(Note: At this point, you, dear reader, may be in a state of panic. We assure you, that feeling will soon be replaced with one of sheer terror. Or maybe that’s the coffee.)

If you just drank four espressos too many, eeexcellent news: There’s a cure for that caffeine OD.

Or just don’t work at all.

As a public service, companies in Sweden, Japan, and New Zealand are getting creative in their definition of the “work week.” In some cases, businesses have cut down on the number of hours or even days employees are required to log on. Sadly, the experiments haven’t all proved magic and rainbows. Sweden really goofed. Why?

“In order to let everyone work six hours a day, the care centre had to hire extra staff to keep up with the work — which cost more money. This scheme and others like it hit the local government’s budget, adding to the deficit within the welfare sector.”

Have a good nap, Henry Nicholls?

  • Go to bed at the same time every night.
  • Even on weekends.
  • Even on your birthday.
  • Even on Christmas when Santa is coming.
  • Even on Leap Day when you get an extra 24 hours to maximize life. Don’t blow this one.
  • Wake up at the same time every morning.
  • Even on Sunday.
  • Even on your birthday.
  • Even on Christmas when you spent all night wrapping “Santa’s presents” for the kids because that lazy jerk didn’t show, again.
  • Don’t drink too much coffee.

“The mental health benefits of dogs are well-documented. Studies show that petting a canine makes the heart rate slow down, blood pressure decrease, muscles relax, and breathing become more regular. Doing so even prompts changes in hormones: Levels of the stress hormone cortisol go down, and levels of the ‘happiness hormone’ oxytocin increase.”
