“The unconscious insists, repeats, and practically breaks down the door, to be heard.” — Annie Rogers, The Unsayable

If you don’t know you’re unconsciously repeating traumas from your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents… how can you become conscious?

The first step is just looking for the patterns.

You might not be able to see them for a while. Finding these signals in the noise of our lives can feel impossible. But it’s not.

By simply taking the approach of someone who loves themselves, you can begin to spot clues.

The hard part here is knowing how you might treat yourself if you DID love yourself. This often requires we get way outside our comfort zones. It requires us to think in long time horizons. Thinking with compassion across long swathes of time can be one of the hardest psychological exercises in the world.

But if you can identify even ONE cycle of trauma and self-abuse that seems to be linked to your ancestors’ trauma…

Then you know what you’re looking for.

Once you find one of what you’re looking for, now you’re better positioned to find two. If you find two, you can identify more.

To get started, think about the times you’ve been in the most severe physical and emotional pain. What were you doing? Were those behaviors similar to ones your parents or grandparents have gone through? Were you seeking to be like them or please them in order to get attention?

After you’ve identified these behaviors, now you’re in a position to do something about them. Tomorrow we’ll talk about how to create space in your life to better identify and prevent these cycles.
