News That Matters

Health

I’d like a sprinkle of Chai with that Tai:

A study published in the Journal of Neuroimaging analyzed the chemical effects of Tai Chi, a mind-body exercise routine, on older adults.

After participants completed a 12 week Tai Chi course, researchers found an improvement in brain metabolism and muscle energetics. This is only a pilot study but could pave the path for similar studies that test if Tai Chi is an effective method for combating psychological and physical disease.

“I decided to play a different game with my life. While the majority of people follow the prescribed program of ‘Go to school, take tests, graduate and enter the employment funnel with no sense of meaning, desire, or intrigue,’ I have and will continue to develop the skills that make a difference in the real world.” — Ayodeji Awosika

From having a bias towards action and knowing how to learn, to acquiring grit and focus, these are the 10 skills that school never taught you.

Tech Trends

Google something with your mind:

The folks at MIT Media Lab are making the ‘impossible’ tech of the future a current reality. One of their recent inventions: a device that you can use to ask Google a question without ever speaking.

“What happens is when you’re reading or when you’re talking to yourself, your brain transmits electrical signals to your vocal cords. You can actually pick these signals up and you can get certain clues as to what the person intends to speak.”

The device picks up these signals, sends them to a computer that converts them into a question and searches for the answer, and then delivers that answer back to the user via ‘vibrations transmitted through his skull and into his inner ear.’ 😲

The future is nigh!

The Marvel Universe has undoubtedly withstood the test of time, but what is it about these stories that keep viewers flooding the box office? Sure, we all love the superb cast and immersive cinematic magic (plus everyone’s favorite Stan Lee cameos and end credits scenes), but there must be more to it than that, right?

We think so. In anticipation of Infinity War, here are 20 quick storytelling lessons we can learn from Marvel.
