The Art of Protecting Your Eyes

That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that history has to teach. –Aldous Huxley

Today’s newsletter is presented by GUNNAR Computer Eyewear. We teamed up to help protect your vision in style. They’ve generously offered readers of The Mission 20% off any order, just enter promo code “MISSION17” upon checkout.

News that Matters

➜ The Journal of Neurophysiology is proving that not only is restoring eyesight and vision possible, but that your brain will adapt remarkably quickly to improved or restored sight. If blind people are able to regain their site, it is certainly possible for you to protect and reverse damage to your eyes and vision.

➜ In fact, it’s so important to humans that a survey done on debate.org showed twice as many people would rather be deaf than blind. That means we would rather live in utter silence, with no music, than be without the eyesight to navigate our world.

What we’re reading

➜ We just published Digital Eye Strain Is Destroying Your Eyes. It’s about how to identify it, protect yourself, and begin reversing the impact. our eyes are a marvel of biological evolution. Digital technologies and blue light are destroying them. This article shows how to protect your eyes.

➜ We’re also studying a controversial technique designed to begin reversing and healing that damage. That technique and overview is covered by none other than Aldous Huxley in his little known book called The Art of Seeing. Here’s a rundown of what’s about:

“Both a document and a handbook The Art of Seeing records Aldous Huxley’s victory over near-blindness and details the simple exercises anyone can follow to improve eyesight. Using the method devised by Dr. William H. Bates, “the pioneer of visual education,” as Huxley called him, and heeding the advice of Dr. Bates’ disciple, Margaret D. Corbett, Aldous Huxley conquered a vision problem that had plagued him for more than a quarter century.”

Your eyes are an integral part in keeping you healthy. They regulate your ability to sleep well, and with the proper amount of sunlight, they’ll ensure you produce enough melatonin. In short, we each inherit these marvels of bioengineering free at birth and nobody shows us how to properly protect, use, and (gasp!) strengthen, heal our eyes, or reverse vision damage. Huxley was a pioneer in more ways than one, and The Art of Seeing is full of unexpected insights and gems to help your eyes and overall mindset. The physical book is almost impossible to find and it’s usually $70 plus. But for readers of The Mission? We’ve got your back. Here is a free PDF copy from Archive.org and for you Kindle readers, you can add it to your Kindle with this download link.

What we’re listening to

Max Richter, from Sleep

Huxley was adamant that vision could be improved by practicing relaxation. This album is perfect for relaxing or to play in the evenings.
