The Best New Thrillers on Netflix, Sci-Fi Throwbacks, and Fire Breathing Fruits
The Best, 2/5/18
The Best is our daily compilation of cool stuff we’ve found IRL and around the web. Every day we will share what we are reading, watching, listening to, doing, or pondering. If you have suggestions for what we should include in future segments, let us know in the comments below!
Watching
Last night during the Super Bowl, Netflix unveiled Cloverfield Paradox, a new thriller.

Also, worth the watch is Netflix’s new show Altered Carbon, released this past Friday. I’m only two episodes in, but so far, it is amazing! The best way to describe it is the world of Total Recall meets Surrogates meets Black Mirror and is sprinkled over with a little something from every action/sci-fi movie that’s ever existed.

Watching Altered Carbon has rebooted my sci-fi interest… which, who are we kidding, never really shut down. 😅 😅
Some of our fav sci-fi books to revisit:
Dune by Frank Herbert
Dune is the story of a young boy named Paul Atreides whose family controls the desert planet Arrakis. As this boy ages, he becomes known as Muad’Dib, a mysterious man who seeks keep control of the planet and to avenge a plot against his family.
Frank Herbert combines complex issues — like politics, religion, technology, and emotion — with a thrilling science fiction story that is worth reading again, and again, and again.
Neuromancer by William Gibson
Thought to be the basis for many other great sci-fi books and movies, Neuromancer is one the most well-known ‘cyperpunk’ novels.
“Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts… A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding…” ―William Gibson
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
Since he was born, Ender Wiggin has been training to fight the ‘buggers’ in an anticipated third invasion.
“In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them…. I destroy them.” ―Orson Scott Card
Listening
Here’s a cool one for ya…
This is a unique kind of podcast that would fall into the category of ‘immersive fiction.’ In The Walk, you are thrown into a thriller in which you are the hero. After an explosion destroys the train you were about to board, your life is turned upside down. Terrorists are after you and the police don’t trust you. Now you must band together with other escapees from the city… but are they who they say they are?

Eating & Drinking
Eating: Apparently, Dragon Fruit is in season.
Call me uncultured, but I had never heard of such a fruit. Naturally, I bought a whole bunch. It may not give you the power to breathe fire, but it’s still pretty dang good.
Drinking: Horrifying amounts of Nyquil.
Our team finally got hit with the insane flu that’s taking over the US of A. It’s one of the worst flu seasons ever, so be sure to protect yourself! While the flu vaccine this year has been wildly ineffective, you can still take steps to keep yourself and your family healthy:
