The Principles of Hermetic Philosophy — Correspondence
“As Above, So Below… As Within, So Without…”
I want you to picture for a moment, a tree.
Think of a healthy, tall, mighty tree.
Got it in your head?
Now, do you notice that the tree is a fractal? A pattern that repeats itself all the way up, and all the way down?
Think about it.
The branches? A smaller version of the trunk. And the trunk? A larger version of the branches.
The Law of Correspondence suggests that this is how the Universe is structured. That the inner workings of the micro are a mirror image to the outer workings of the macro.
That your inner world is a reflection of your outer world, and vice versa.
That you’re always looking in a mirror, because the mirror is all there is.
But how does this relate to you within your daily life?
Simply put, your external world is a reflection of your internal world.
I want you to deeply consider not only what you think about on a daily basis, but how you think on a daily basis.
Really, be as self-critical as you can be here.
Now, compare your thoughts to your external circumstances.
Do you notice any similarities?
Most likely, you do.
If your mental environment is toxic, you’ll naturally lead yourself into circumstances that make your physical environment toxic. Or, if your mental environment is healthy, you’ll naturally lead yourself into circumstances that make your physical environment healthy.
It is impossible for life to ever be but a reflection of your mind.
And becoming aware of this is how you make lasting change within your life.
If you want to improve your external circumstances, your internal circumstances must first improve.
And when you notice your external world becoming better as a result of your internal world becoming better, it’ll facilitate even further development of your inner world.
One follows the other, follows the other, onward into infinity.
But maybe you don’t know where to start.
Maybe you have some inclination that you have some toxicity within you, something that needs to change, but you’re not sure where to look..
Look towards the platinum rule.
The golden rule says to treat others the way you would like to be treated.
But the platinum rules says that everyone is you living another life, so treat them as such.
Look towards what bothers you most about other people.
And that is most likely what bothers you most about yourself.
Look towards what you like most about other people.
As that is most likely what you like most about yourself.
This, of course, is just an exercise. Deep meditation and critical self-reflection will bring you to the same conclusions.
The choice, then, lies in doing less of that which is toxic and more of that which is healthy.
While this may not be easy for some, one thing is for certain —
It is simple.
Keep this principle in your mind for the next week, act on it, and watch as your external world slowly begins to shift in correspondence with the changes you’re making to your internal world.
As above, so below…
As within, so without…
