This month will be the first time I’ll get paid to write articles & a message to my fellow writers…
After close to two years of writing all but 3 days on the same subject matter (social media/content mktg.), and after being read by over a million folks around the globe, I’m just now seeing direct compensation from the work.
Damn…
Many writers will look at this state of affairs for writing with disdain. With frustration. With angst.
Why aren’t we getting paid for all the hard work we do?
Why should I get pennies for work that took me weeks to create?
Why is writing historically, undervalued relative to other skill sets?
These thoughts are totally understandable. But honestly, I don’t see the state of affairs for writers as good OR bad. I just see it as the reality we have to live with.
But here’s the thing: today, there are MORE ways than ever before to get money from your work as a writer.
The only thing you’ve gotta change is your mindset. Instead of thinking of writing as your FINAL product or offering, begin thinking about it as a MEANS TO AN END.
Think of your writing as a way to showcase your expertise in a specific area.
While direct compensation (ad sales from views, etc.) may never be a viable, steady source of income for most writers, there are tons of other revenue streams you can look into by leveraging your work today. Here are just a few…
1.) Paid speaking gigs.
2.) Increasing sales with persuasive copy.
3.) Consulting gigs.
4.) Partnerships with brands you like (“influencer mktg.”)
5.) Freelancing.
The list goes on and on. You’ve just gotta be creative in your approach. You’ve gotta be creative in the way you leverage your work as proof of your competency.
Be the first to reach out to the blogs you’d like to write for. Be the first to reach out to the brands you’d like to work with. Be the first to reach out to potential consulting clients. Be the first to reach out to agents for a possible book deal.
Then, use your writing as proof of your expertise. Use it as a gateway. As validation.
The written word is powerful and always will be. The only thing that will change is the marketplace. If you can adjust your sails effectively, you’ll be just fine.
Trust me.
