“What you don’t have you don’t need it now. What you don’t know you can feel it somehow.” — Bono (aka Paul Hewson)

If you’re like me, you’re a big dreamer. You love to think big thoughts about the future and where it will take you. You get fired up and excited thinking about who’s going to be a part of this amazing journey with you. As you think further, you wonder about how and when the pieces will logically fit. But it is not the sequence, nor timing that matters.

It is the journey of faith that determines our happiness and direction. Where we go next, who’s part of the ride with us and when it happens, is truly proportionate to the faith that resides within all of us.

So, I ask you, what’s your next move? What have you been dreaming of that has driven you to be more productive? What is inspiring you to be a better person? What have you learned during your journey that has made you want to create something new and beautiful?

I’ve been pondering the next big move in my life for the better part of the past year. Part of this journey of contemplation and personal discovery has been the realization that I want to continue to keep building — every day — toward living a life where I support myself and my family purely on what I create. For me, this means my writing, coaching and the speaking engagements I deliver.

What about you?

Ruminating on these thoughts — and envisioning my next steps — has been equal parts refreshing and insightful. While I don’t control every outcome and I surely can’t predict the future, I have been empowered by the belief that I do control my worldly destiny. As William Ernest Henley wrote in his famous poem, Invictus:

“I am the master of my fate.”

In other words, though I rely with strong faith on God, and while I know I can’t make it on my own, my effort and attitude will determine my fate in life. My fate is not determined by my co-worker, boss or some naysayer. I control it. And guess what? You have the same exact power within your control.

“You are the master of your destiny. You can influence, direct and control your own environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.” — Napoleon Hill

If you haven’t realized that yet, I believe it’s time to make the paradigm shift in mindset toward one of abundance and empowerment. You will truly get what you desire when you start believing and acting upon your faith.

Timing

“The great lesson is that the sacred is in the ordinary, that it is to be found in one’s daily life, in one’s neighbors, friends, and family, in one’s backyard.” — Abraham Maslow

I recently participated in a young professionals leadership program here in the Atlanta area. It was a truly rewarding experience. I met some amazing people and gained new insights and ideas that have heavily influenced my outlook on life and my writing.

This program was geared toward producing a new generation of servant leaders who care deeply about giving back to their community. I was paired with a mentor — a fellow writer and author — who has provided me with some great wisdom and guidance. He said some very powerful words to me recently that deeply touched me. I felt their gravity and realized their truth:

The right people are placed into our lives at the right time and in the right order.

When you come to realize and believe this, it is a very liberating feeling. It gives you greater confidence and faith in yourself. It also gives you the chills, once you come to know its truth.

I know this to be true because this has happened time and again in my life! It happened when a young woman, who I now call my wife, entered my life in graduate school. It happened on the day we married. We knew we were making the right decision. Our baby boy also came into our lives at the right time. When we were ready to be parents.

And soon, I will start a great, new job with a growing company that values my unique skill set and believes I will help them take even bigger strides. This position wasn’t ready for me one year ago. I wasn’t ready for it six months ago. But because of the person I’ve become, and improvements I’ve made, this opportunity has now presented itself.

Faith Precedes Opportunity

I’ll continue writing and finishing my book. I’ll continue to find new speaking engagements where I can share my message with the world. I’m so much further ahead with my goals and priorities because I’ve believed and trusted that people and opportunities will come into my life when they’re supposed to, and in the right sequence for the rhythm of my life.

It’s a beautiful feeling.

Think of the opportunities that you currently have in your life. Take another look at your road map — the plan that will help you get to where you want to be. If you’re worried that everything has not yet aligned exactly how you think it’s supposed to, please, leave that worry behind. You’re the one in control. Keep Going.

The right opportunities and people will come along. You might not know when or how just yet. But they will, if you believe. Have faith. Don’t worry about what you don’t have right now. A knowledge and firmament of your values and beliefs gives you greater confidence, from which you can wisely make all of your decisions.

As Bono once sang, “What you don’t know, you (really) can feel it, somehow.” What you need will come when you’re ready, right on time, as always, and in the right order.
