Getting into wrestling

Of all the cool gigs that I’ve had fall into my lap in L.A. working as a production assistant for GCW for the last 3 years has been the coolest.

My first GCW show I gave Emil Jay and Masha Slamovitch a ride from their hotel to the Ukrainian Arts Event Center in Hollywood. What was in it for me was a free ticket and a backstage pass that could potentially lead to something more.

I was sitting around watching the wrestlers go over their matches when the owner of GCW Brett Lauderdale came up to me and asked if I could help with the meet and greet. I’m left in a room with a wrestling trainee and a 50 something year old Japanese death match wrestler they call the murder grandpa, Minoru Suzuki.

I did not pay 50 bucks for this. Image author

We were sitting in silence 15 minutes before the doors open. I figured I’d break the ice.

“So, Minoru. Read any good books lately?”
