Bulletproof Coffee — It Ruined My Day and Made Me Sick

To start this post I will say that I am on the Keto Diet which is a low carb and high fat diet. I am on this diet to 1. cut weight for a BJJ tournament and 2. support my wife while she is also on Keto.

I had done some reading and heard about Bulletproof and Ketoproof coffee. The difference being that bulletproof coffee does not have heavy cream and ketoproof coffee does. I proceeded to follow the recipe I found online which there are many, many, many of the exact same recipe. I used 2 tablespoons or coconut oil (MCT Oil also works), 2 tablespoons of Kerrygold butter and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Since I didn’t feel like blending it I put it in a shaker cup and shook it up, which worked great no need to blend!

I made a cup for both myself and my wife and it was delicious! After 3 or 4 sips my wife started complaining that her stomach was hurting so she stopped drinking the coffee. My stomach felt fine so I proceeded to drink almost the whole cup. About 20 minutes later while I was eating my breakfast my stomach started to hurt badly, I couldn’t even eat all of my food. An hour later and I was dripping sweat laying on the floor in front of a fan feeling weak and like I was going to vomit.

Of course this happened while we were in the middle of redoing the floors in our house so I’m basically wasting 2 hours of work time fighting off the urge to puke. I finally started to move again and was able to get back to the flooring but I still didn’t feel right, I was dizzy and very weak. As time went on I started to feel better, my wife and I both didn’t eat lunch and by the time the stomach pain wore off a good 8 hours later we were starving.

Later that night I hit the Google machine to see what happened and as it turns out we weren’t the only ones who had this happen to them. When trying Bulletproof coffee you need to ease into the coconut oil and not go with the full amount on the first try. I wish all the recipes I read had said that. I may try it again but it will be a while.
