1. Welcome

Thank you for showing interest in writing for The Modern Scientist.

This publication aims to contribute to the knowledge of modern science. From machine learning to blockchain analytics, we believe that the world of tomorrow is being coded right now.

The beauty of Medium is that it connects people with expert yet accessible content. The site is perfect for our publication because it sits midway between internet articles and academic literature.

That is why we, at TMS, encourage writers to go through our submission process. Our team curates the content best designed for our readers, considering the insights, flair and pleasure each writer brings.

2. On becoming a writer

Become a subject matter expert

Writing is a healthy exercise. It implies understanding things thoroughly in order to present them simply. Successful writers not only help their community, but also gift themselves with expertise.

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” — Albert Einstein

An expert isn’t simply knowledgeable; they also bring an understanding of the limitations and challenges in their field. So when your story gets published, it gets shared with millions of readers on the internet who can share and interact with your views. On top of connecting to the world, publishing technical content establishes you as an expert.

And your career grows even further as you add this content to your portfolio or resume.

Grow your audience

Our pledge is to develop your audience in a way that is strategic and relevant. Our short-term goal is to spread the content to readers both on and off medium.com. That means that publishing through The Modern Scientist will help you reach out to a wider audience than releasing content on any single site.

What’s more, you’ll benefit from better referencing and automatically leverage Medium’s algorithm to drive more traffic to your content.

Earn as your write

Our distribution model is simple: writers keep 100% of their earnings.

Future opportunities:

In parallel to developing the publication, The Modern Scientist has developed a three-stage plan to grow our community and expand our reach:

1.Newsletter

Our first milestone in the coming weeks is to send out a weekly newsletter to our subscribers. The newsletter will allow readers to catch up with the latest insights and build a closer connection with our community.

2. Socials

One of our members will be fully assigned to managing our socials (currently LinkedIn and Twitter).

3. Audio

As soon as the publication reaches a few thousand followers, we will set up a voiced version of the content. This may involve regular contributors and will either be distributed as a podcast or via Knowable.

Disclaimer

We abide by Medium’s terms & conditions. Therefore, when publishing through The Modern Scientist you agree to respect Medium’s rules of writing. Offensive, abusive, and any kind of inappropriate content will be ruled out immediately.

CTA allowed but with moderation

Adding a personal call to action at the end of your article is welcome as long as it doesn’t interfere with the quality of the writing.

4. Style guide

We want our authors to enjoy the freedom of writing. However, we need to ask for a minimum of due diligence to ensure the vibe of the article and the publication match.

For this reason, we ask you to review the following:

  • Title + Subtitle: Beware the caps
  • Grammar check: Please proofread your article before sending it through
  • Areas / topics: Data science, data analytics, blockchain analytics, Web 3.0, computer science, software engineering
  • Focus on the value : Will the reader be better off after reading your article?
  • Data Sovereignty: Make sure data is compliant to the laws of the country in which it is processed
  • No max. or minimum length: Although a reasonable word count is expected
  • Photo copyrights/sources: Your images should include both the names of their sources and links to them
  • Alt text to images: Just as a map must have a title, every image needs to come with alt text
  • Code should look pretty: Please don’t screenshot it. Git, online add-ons or Medium’s integrated solution are all welcome
  • Compliance with Medium guidelines: As mentioned above
  • SEO tags: On the internet, SEO is king
  • References: Although we don’t ask for a strict referencing method, please try to include at least: Author’s name, year of publication, title of the source
  • Last but not least, please remember the following:

Unpublished drafts get better exposure

5. Closing thoughts
