The Quantum Triforce
The Triforce balances the forces of power, wisdom, and courage in The Legend of Zelda series. If you can get it, it will grant you a wish.
I was recently asked — twice — what I’m most looking forward to with quantum computing. The first time was in person, after I gave a talk on “Quantum Computing: AI and Sustainability.” The second time was by Jack Krupansky, which means it’s time to write an article about it.
The Encoding Problem
One of quantum computing’s many challenges is the efficient encoding of classical information onto qubits. The first “cheat” I ever encountered involves QRAM, some kind of quantum memory that has the information already encoded. Well, that sure is convenient, but how are we going to load the QRAM? But I digress….
The second “cheat” occurred to me while learning about quantum sensors. What if we could skip classical encoding altogether and process the quantum information from quantum sensors? Would the computation have to be done at the sensor, or how would that work?
But then I started learning about quantum networks. It turns out there are organizations out there that are researching how to network quantum sensors and quantum computers together. The quantum information will be fed from quantum sensors via quantum networks to quantum computers for quantum…
