Letters to Pete: “Living in fear is not living.”
By Cristina S., GA
Every day, Pete Buttigieg receives letters from Americans who believe we need a new approach to solve our nation’s biggest challenges. This is one of them. The following letter is transcribed as it was received on July 2, 2019.
Hi to whoever my read this,
My name is Cristina, I am a high school senior, and it will be actually my first time ever voting in 2020.
My parents are immigrants and the most hardworking and dedicated people I know. I am the eldest of 5 kids and I will be the first person in my family to vote. I am the voice of 7 people in one vote which is crazy for me to think about considering we can’t even agree on what to make for dinner. However there is one thing my crazy Mexican family can agree on which is that we need a president that supports us as an immigrant family.
The life of the children of immigrants is a hard one. Living everyday praying that God protects us from a police officer stopping us or an ICE officer knocking on our door to deport our parents. Living in fear is not living which is what my mom teaches us everyday when she takes the brave decision everyday to drive past city hall to take my sister and I to the bus stop. I go to school a grueling hour bus and train ride away. My school teaches us to be ‘men and women for and with others’ no matter the situation of a person. I view my school motto as the perfect definition for you and your campaign.
Georgia has been a red state for years, however, looking at the last election for governor, anyone can see that Georgia is changing. I know my email may be lost among the crowd but I hope that you can see and try to reach out to a state like Georgia. I want to be able to see my presidential candidate be in Atlanta. We just need someone who will put the time to talk to use. The Democratic Party has ignored Georgia and we just want them to hear us. Please hear us. Thank you for taking time out of your day to listen.
