Letters to Pete: “When mayor Pete talks about affordable healthcare for everyone he is talking about my family.”
By Trish H., IN
Every day, Pete Buttigieg receives letters from Americans who believe we need a new approach to solve our nation’s biggest challenges. This is one of them. The following letter is transcribed as it was received on April 16, 2019.
As soon as I got home I sent Pete $10 from my Uber money.
Uber is not my first job but my part time job. During the day I work with special needs children. My husband used to build boats.
I say he used to, because on November 11 of last year, he fell down our basement steps and broke his leg. He has been unable to work since that time. He’s had surgery twice already. I’m writing this email while I am in the waiting room waiting for him to come out of his third surgery. He obviously lost his job. And we lost his health insurance.
When mayor Pete talks about affordable healthcare for everyone he is talking about my family. This one accident has devastated our family. The tax return money has run out, the insurance money has run out. We’ve been forced to apply for food stamps and Medicaid and food stamps. We have worked hard our whole lives, and one little hot wheel car may ruin us.
Unfortunately the school system does not pay very well it’s not a living wage. And the insurance cost more than I make. The cobra insurance was over a thousand dollars a month.
Mayor Pete also talked about how most families are one medical accident away from bankruptcy that is my family as well.
I need him to fight this fight for us.
Trish H.
