MPs voted in favor of an English national anthem instead of the infamous “God Save the Queen”.

British anthem God Save the Queen is currently used at sporting events across England. MP of Chesterfield Toby Perkins proposed that there should be a designated English song.

It has been debated for years that England should have an English National Anthem other than the British one which represents the whole of Great Britain.

It is yet to be debated again at a second reading on the fourth of March.

Scotland uses the Flower of Scotland and Wales used the Land of Our Fathers in international football games. If the bill passed in England, Northern Ireland officials have said that they would most likely follow suit.

Meanwhile, #NationalAnthem has been trending on Social Media platforms across England where users are sharing their suggestions shall the bill pass today.

One of the most popular suggestions on Twitter was the one made by Comedy Central UK to use Pheobe’s “Smelly Cat”

To which the Arts council England said they can’t support it as they would prefer an English composer.

Runner ups to God Save the Queen, include

“Jerusalem” which was unofficially adopted as the English national anthem for England during the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

“Land of Hope and Glory” which was used as the victory anthem for the team of England at the Commonwealth Games until the Delhi Commonwealth Games when Jerusalem was voted instead.
