Don’t lie, in 2002 you and your BFFLZ (“Best Friends for Life Zzz”… I never understood what the ‘Z’ was for) lined up to see the one of the greatest stories of friendship ever told, starring none other than Queen Britney Spears. The trio of young women journey together across the United States in the worlds greatest road trip ever. Seriously, they make their own clothes, make some serious cash rocking out at karaoke and found something they had forgotten about over the years, what it means to be a true friend. They made you jealous of their friendship, and rightfully so, because who wouldn’t want to be best friends with nerdy Britney, tough girl Taryn Manning or even a kind of stuck-up but still super-stylish Zoe Saldana.
Since the film’s debut in 2002, this trio has become more than the girls we knew in Crossroads. They are a bunch of kick ass stage and screen goddesses (Zoe in Guardians of the Galaxy, Taryn in Orange is the New Black and Britney still being the amazing Britney Spears), who we will love forever for helping us through that awkward time in our lives where we were’t little girls anymore, but we weren’t quite women yet either. Damn, I wish someone would turn that into a song.
AND HOLD THE PHONE, Crossroads was also directed by comedy powerhouse Tamra Davis (director of Billy Madison and Half Baked) and it was written by Shonda Rhimes (writer of Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy) who has a penchant for making my heart feel things. In the words of Chandler Bing if he watched this movie, “Could this film BE anymore female empowering?” No sir, no it cannot.
Also, home-pride bonus points for featuring the amazing Canadian actress Kim Cattrall, who plays the role of Lucy’s mother who abandoned her and her father (played by Dan Aykroyd). Although her role is far from the heart-warming roles of the other women in the movie, it is adds to the diversity of the characters in Crossroads.
To end this I would personally like to thank Britney, Zoe and Taryn for showing me and I’m sure many girls out there that if you go for it, believe in yourself, and have a great set of girlfriends, then there’s nothing you can’t do.
