Copy, Transform, Combine

According to Kirby Ferguson in his Everything is a Remix Remastered video, he talks about how everything is a remix. It states that all new creative thoughts are the byproducts of external influences. Essentially, there are no original thoughts or ideas, instead, all things are remixes or in other words, copied, transformed, and combined into something new. He talks about how as a collective whole an original idea may be just that, but in reality, each individual piece is influenced directly or indirectly by past ideas, inventions, or creations. He makes an important distinction in his video when talking about this issue. He said that copying without altering anything is stealing and is damaging to human creativity, but copying to transform it into something new is the most natural thing that humans do. New ideas aren’t that they have never been thought of before, it is that they haven’t been combined or thought of in that way. Fundamentally, everything is a remix of what came before.
