When C.J. Beathard was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers following a decent college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes, he wasn’t expected to be the team’s starting quarterback this season.

That has now changed.

Beathard has started four straight games for the 49ers since taking over for prior-starter Brian Hoyer, who was benched after leading San Francisco to a winless record in six starts.

Despite the fact that the team traded for former New England Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who it likely expects to be a long-term fix at the quarterback position, on Oct. 30, Beathard has retained his starting job.

But how well has he performed just 10 games into his NFL career?

Beathard has played in six games for San Francisco this season, starting four. The 24 year-old is 101-of-186 passing for 1,229 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Beathard has also notched 115 yards and three scores on just 20 rushes, good for a 5.8 yards-per-carry average.

San Francisco is 1–3 in games that Beathard has started this season. The lone win was the 49ers’ only victory on the year so far and came against the New York Giants in the team’s last contest. Beathard completed 19 of his 25 pass attempts for 288 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the win.

With six more games on the schedule for the team in 2017, Beathard’s ability to stave off Garoppolo and keep the starting job may turn out to be one of the team’s most interesting storylines. While the rookie hasn’t performed poorly, the potential that Garoppolo brings to the 49ers is without question.

It will be a key decision for first-year head coach Kyle Shanahan. Only time will tell which signal caller will he will ultimately choose.
