“Vegan” (n): a person who does not eat any food that comes from animals

Here’s what I’ve learned from eating a plant-based vegan diet for a year and a half now…

1. You can eat a lot of food

The right kinds of healthy foods, that is.

Grilled Vegetables
Rice & Beans, Roasted Zucchini, Beet & Tomato Salad

2. Bloating happens

Certain raw foods can cause bloating. Cooking your foods, mostly beans & veggies helps to make them easier to digest.

3. More color is better

“Variety is the spice of life.”

4. Hydrating is easier

Foods with lots of water inside will help you stay hydrated.

5. Nutrients are essential

Micro-nutrients are necessary for optimal health and a strong immune system. I personally have only been sick 1–2 times within the past year. I attribute my immune system health to high nutrient intake.

6. People will stare, you will get questions

You will get looks, questions, and comments. Embrace them, people are curious.

7. It takes longer to eat

Lots of fiber means lots of chewing. Salads are especially time consuming, but worth it.

Chew, chew, chew.

8. Food is harmony

The more nutrient-rich foods you eat, the better you’ll feel. You’ll feel a sense of harmony and connection with life.

9. You’ll become more creative

Many food options exist, it’s just a matter of finding them. Veganism is not “boring” or “bland.” You will actually exercise your creativity with recipes and food combinations.

Yellow Curry Vegetable Fried Rice
Spaghetti Squash, Roasted Corn & Potatoes, Mixed Salad
Homemade Red Pepper Hummus

Life is about options.

10. Planning is essential

Before making plans, you’ll need to think about the food options you’ll have available to you.

A little planning goes far.

11. Speak up for yourself

Don’t be afraid to request certain foods and ask for substitutions. Most restaurants and people are accommodating.

12. Limit processed foods

Limit processed foods. You’ll definitely feel a negative difference in mental cognition and digestion if you eat them.

13. Going plant-based is easier than you think

The biggest change happens in the mind first, the body follows. As long as you prepare and remember your reasons for switching, you’ll be fine. If you don’t enjoy it, you can always try something else.

14. Your body will adapt

Don’t believe common culture saying you’ll “shrink down” and “get skinny”, this is FALSE. You will instead lose excess water and toxins. You will be able to get stronger and achieve your fitness goals. Follow a balanced fitness routine for you.

ex) Strength Training, Aerobic Activity, Stretching.

15. You’ll get enough protein

The protein myth has been debunked. There are plenty of plant based sources of protein. You don’t need protein powders or supplements if you’re eating a wholesome plant-based diet.

16. Track your food

You should know approximately how many calories and macro-nutrients (protein, carbs, fats) you are eating.

MyFitnessPal is a great app…

17. You are your own scientist

Your body is NOT a textbook. You are your own best scientist. Definitely read the science, but ultimately your body will respond in ways unique to you.

Try different foods and see how they respond with you.

18. Plant-based substitutions exist

19. Your sweet tooth will be satisfied

There are PLENTY of delicious plant based sweet treats! Yum.

20. You’ll feel better

Increased energy, better digestion, and clearer thoughts.

Veganism isn’t for everyone, but it has many positive benefits for people. Find a style of eating that suits your body and makes you feel your amazing.
