It was two days before Christmas in 1974, and 14-year-old Renee Wilson was eager to get to the Army and Navy store in Fort Worth where she had a pair of jeans on hold. Her 17-year-old friend Rachel Trlica agreed to drive her, and the two girls planned to continue to the South Seminary mall afterwards to do a little Christmas shopping.

Renee assumed her boyfriend Terry Moseley would be accompanying them, but he changed his mind and informed her he wouldn’t be going after all.

He would later tell NBC’s Dateline: “I backed out at kind of the last minute, because a friend of mine was going to go to the hospital to have an operation, and I told him I would hang out with him. I didn’t really want to renege on that.”

However, the two friends did end up with another companion that afternoon. Nine-year-old Julie Ann Moseley, Terry’s little sister, had gotten wind of the shopping trip and had begged her mother to be able to accompany the teenagers to alleviate her…
