In 1996, a young Swedish woman named Karina Holmer had embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. After an unexpected windfall, she had made the trip across the Atlantic Ocean to the US where she had taken a job as an au pair.
However, mere months later, she was dead at the hands of a cold-blooded killer. Now, a quarter of a century on, police hope they might finally find the clues to discover what really happened — and, more importantly, who was responsible for her killing.
A dream trip turns into a nightmare
In March 1996, Karina Holmer appeared to have the world at her feet. She originated from the small town of Skillingaryd some 150 miles from Stockholm, where she was part of a pony club and the equivalent of the Girl Scouts.
Although she was happy in this rural idyll, Karina wanted to travel and, when she scooped $1,500 on a lottery ticket, it seemed as though her wishes had been answered. She decided to use the money to purchase flights to the US and settled on the city of Boston.
