Warminster is an English town of about 17,000 people on the edge of the Salisbury Plain Military Training Area, about 15 miles (25 km) from the famous Stonehenge pre-historic stone circle in Wiltshire, southwest England.

Beginning at the end of 1964, residents of the town (its population then was about 10,000) started to witness something strange happening in Warminster.

At 1.25 am on Christmas morning, 1964, Mrs Mildred Head was awoken by a strange noise. At first, it sounded as if twigs were scratching on her roof and then as if giant hailstones were raining down. She got up and went to the window. The night was dry and clear, she could see nothing unusual. She did, however, notice “a strange humming sound, which grew louder and then faded away, except for ‘a faint whisper — a low whistling or wheezing.’”

Later that morning, just after 6 am, Mrs Marjorie Bye was walking along dark, quiet streets to the Holy Communion Service at Christ Church, Warminster. The first odd thing she noticed was a ‘crackling’ sound from the direction of the nearby Bell Hill area of the town. As she approached the church, she experienced a ‘sonic attack’:
