When Robert and his wife, Gail Katz-Bierenbaum, moved into a cozy Manhattan apartment, they were welcomed with open arms.
Whether in Manhattan or the smaller towns he moved into later, Robert gained an amiable reputation.
However, that was not always the case. Initially, everyone found Robert strange- he was overly confident and lowkey eccentric.
Soon enough, his civic behaviour won over the town. He published a bagel recipe in a local newspaper and gave free medical care to orphans.
For the neighbors, the accomplished New York doctor’s helping behaviour was generous enough to ignore the obvious red flags.
Curt Hussey, a resident, recalled his first impression of Robert, saying:
“At first, it was just, ‘That guy is nothing but strange,’ But he was just like, ‘Anything to do to help.’’’
