Al Capone — the infamous mob boss — began his life far from the spotlight of organized crime. He was born on January 17, 1899, in Brooklyn, New York, to Gabriel and Teresina Capone — two hardworking Italian immigrants. He was one of nine children in a family that cherished values of respect and comfort.

As a young boy, Al Capone found himself drawn to the power dynamics that unfolded on the streets of Brooklyn. The neighborhood was home to many ethnic gangs, each trying to control their share of the turf. Al Capone was just another child growing up in the bustling neighborhood of Brooklyn. He spent his early years in a tight-knit immigrant community, and his parents worked hard to provide for their family.

They did not have much, so they instilled in their children the values of hard work and respect for others. Capone enjoyed playing baseball and swimming in the East River as a child. He was a charismatic, outgoing child who had a knack for leadership. But what made him America’s most notorious gangster?
