Bizarre Buildings Part 3 — Inverted Pyramid House
If you have ever wondered what a home from the future would look like, then the Inverted Pyramid Solo House by Japanese firm TNA (led by Makoto Takei and Chie Nabeshima) certainly fits the bill…
The Inverted Pyramid House seems to have fallen down and pushed itself deep enough into the hillside to stay upright. It has amazing views of the countryside and is in Matarraña, Spain.
The house is part of French developer Christian Bourdais’ Solo Houses series. TNA is one of 15 architectural firms commissioned to create the ultimate holiday home. Each firm has been given carte blanche to come up with any concept within a fixed budget.
There are three bedrooms, a lounge on the top level with access to a swimming pool on the roof. Unfortunately the pyramid shaped swimming pool below the house has been removed from the final design.
Large windows in surrounding the large living area provide stunning views of the surrounding countryside. There are a number of mezzanine levels which seem to float within the pyramid. These separate levels create detached living spaces and make the interior feel airy and spacious.
The layout has been created to ensure that natural light penetrates all areas of the the house.
The Dining Room is on the ground floor with a Kitchen, Pantry and Machine Room set into the hillside behind it. The Entrance and Lounge on two separate mezzanines overlook the Dining Room.
Christian Bourdais plans to bring innovative architecture to the Spanish countryside. The Guardian has described the project as “architectural collectables”
There will be fifteen holiday homes with a hotel designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radić at the centre. There will also be “an exceptional outdoor golf course combining art and architecture” created by Serpentine Galleries director Hans-Ulrich Obrist and landscape architect Bas Smets.
Of the 15 homes the first to be completed was a symmetrical concrete residence by Chilean architect Pezo von Ellrichshausen and the second was Kersten Geers David van Severin’s ring shaped house.
Other Solo Houses under construction include a house surrounded by a lattice of giant sticks by Sou Fujimoto, a building based on the form of an explosion by Didier Faustino and a circular house with a paddling pool on the roof by Johnston Marklee.
“a collection of unique secondary residences designed by the new guard of young international architects” The Solo Houses website
This unconventional house certainly defies any conventional ideas with it’s imposing silhouette that seems to be perilously balanced.
