A short internship in my junior year took me to Lesotho, a country surrounded along the entire border by South Africa. After the internship I hopped across the border to South Africa to take a trip up to the Kruger National Park — one of Africa’s largest game reserves.

On the second day, we took a jeep ride through the jungles and bushes, away from the protected zone for people, deep into the national park into the sanctuary of nearly all the wild animals I know of. The tales of meeting wondrous creatures large and small are for another time.

Our safari guides set up a large tent for the whole group to have dinner together. We sat around the table hastily after returning from the drive. Somebody was playing the tambourine nearby as we gobbled down the food. As the night darkened and our eyelids were longing to meet each other, a park ranger came close to the dining area and with a rumbling voice drew our attention to his special nighttime instruction.

He said with suppressed alarm in his voice that a small group of bull elephants were out on the loose tonight and they were spotted rummaging around the nearby forest.
