My one month old baby laying on my bed, staring back at the camera holding one toe mid air — as tiny and helpless as can be — yet tranquil
“My firstborn” — Author’s image

I will never forget the first time he moved within my womb. The flutters became stronger and with growing strength he let me know, “I am here and am a part of you.”

However, it still places a far second to the instant I nursed him. The connection was no longer an invisible tie hidden within my being. My eyes and body worked in unison to meet his nutritional and physical needs.

Just as a cluster of cells multiplied to form this unique human being, a cluster of initial moments multiplied over the years forming a mother-son bond unique from any other.

I held him and instantly a nook was carved in my heart without my knowing, bearing his name. It took up a space I hardly noticed, but time let me know: it was the beginning of a permanent home that will endure for as long as my heart beats.

I can’t say I yearned to be married or a mother when I was a young girl. I was naive in my youth. I simply assumed the natural progression of life is such that you find your spouse and a human being with organs such as mine — becomes a mother.
