It’s My Birthday — I Expect To Be Humored

Even if my birthday request involves dinosaurs

Since Hubs and I have been at this married thing for four and a half decades — he knows the drill. It’s best to humor me.

Our usual MO for birthdays is to go out for a fancy dinner. I’m all for fancy dinners but also for leveraging my birthday to get him to do something he’s not thrilled about. It’s not like I have to wait for my birthday to get him to humor me — he has learned a few things along the way.

My request was simple. We’ve lived in the desert for seven years, and before living here, we were snowbirds as full-time RVers for three years. We love the desert but like living anywhere we often forget to be tourists in our own backyard.

My request — let’s be tourists and venture out on a day trip.

Rust colored head of a Chinese Dragon with body of a serpent positioned to look like it’s coming in and out of the desert sand. Mountains in the distance and bright blue cloudless sky.

He agreed and I laid out my plan. I’d heard of the crazy sculptures in the desert in the Borrego Springs area. I did enough googling to determine we could view them with minimal time out of the truck — meaning minimal time sweating our keesters off.

I’m a woman who pays attention and enjoys sharing the absurd things I notice. My humor essay collection and less-humorous memoir are in the works..
