Mom’s greenhouse. Photo by Dawn Barr (used with permission).

Last autumn, my mother and father built a small greenhouse in their yard. Situated just a few meters from their front door, it provided the space for my mom to start her garden in wintry Northern Michigan.

Even on April 5, when the high is expected to reach 36 degrees F and the wind makes it feel like 25 F, it’s a nice, balmy 70 F+ in the greenhouse. It’s a plant haven that makes you just happy to be standing in.

Upon arrival earlier in the week, mom pointed to a plant moved apart from her greenhouse. We concluded that it did, in fact, have aphids. We weren’t sure where they came from but each day another pepper plant joined it on the porch with the signs of infestation.

I turned to Dr. Google, horticultural expert, and knower of all things. A variety of offerings from soaps and chemicals were offered as a solution. But, lo and behold, we learned that Ms. Ladybugs enjoy a steady diet of aphids and mites.

Enter Señor Amazon. Mom canceled the spray order and hit buy now on 1500 live ladybugs, proving you can buy just about anything on Amazon.
