These are guidelines I follow when I write. I break most of these rules at times, but I do it with intention. Let me know if you agree or disagree with any of these.

Online Writing Tips

  • Title NOT literary, but rather, descriptive and catchy
  • Subtitle hints at a bit more. Don’t tell the story in your title and subtitle
  • No click bait or anything sexual
  • Photo has attribute and is a bright, engaging photo that previews well, and attribution underneath
  • Story is relevant and somewhat universal, if a personal essay or memoir; what can reader take away from it?
  • Consider the tone: upbeat? engaging? does the story impel reader to continue reading?Interesting?
  • Genre: Nonfiction/memoir will be narrative, w beginning/middle/end. Of course, personal essays and memoirs will tend to be emotive, confessional, etc.
  • Graphs and charts, if used, as well as photos, are helpful to the text, rather than confusing. No random Youtube songs, etc.
  • Length is not a determining factor in approving a story for publication with us, but…
