Four Conversations: The Future of Work

Four Conversations is an annual signature programme by the National Library where thought leaders share new possibilities for the future, while inspiring lifelong learning and the creation of new knowledge.

This resource guide was produced in accompaniment with the conversation: The Future of Work.

Organisations have been implementing digital transformation for years, but never has it been more important than today. The global pandemic has disrupted businesses, supply chains and physical meetings all over the world. Many believe COVID-19 has forced businesses to move much more quickly to adopt online tools and digital transformation roadmaps have been compressed from years-long processes to weeks or even days.[1] Businesses need new ways to engage customers, stakeholders and staff. The future of work is no longer just a prediction; it is now.

What does this mean for organisations and their employees? New work patterns must be explored, project teams need to be more flexible, and technology must match employee capabilities (and vice versa). As technologies such as blockchain, AI, Internet of Things, and UX surface to plug the gaps caused by COVID-19,[2] all staff, from employees to top management, will need to learn and adapt.
