After the death of her good friend Steph, Kathy Dunkle doubted the existence of a higher power. Steph was only 16 and died in a car crash.

Kathy questioned why God would allow innocent children to die. Her life was also filled with difficulty. Her father’s job required them to move often. And she would be teased at her many new schools every time.

She wanted to believe, but it seemed like nobody was in control of anything — not even God, the highest power.

At 17 years old, Kathy got married, and by 21, she had two children. Her husband was an abusive alcoholic. And for years, Kathy felt nothing but pain from that man.

One night, as she was lost in deep thoughts looking at the Kansas sky, Kathy said, “God, if you’re really up there, if you really exist, would you just give me one year of knowing what it’s like to feel love, to be loved, and to love someone else? Just one year of happiness.”

She quickly snapped out of it because she knew God didn’t exist.

Soon after, she found the courage to take her beat-up car and leave Kansas City with her sons.
