“Everything was exactly where it was supposed to be.” — Tony Woody

“I am never gonna see my son again.”

That’s the first thing Tony thought as he realized that their aircraft was going to crash.

In 1982, Tony Woody, a Marine Corps pilot, was about to fly with his crew on their Pacific Rim military exercise. They filled their plane with plenty of fuel to fly for 12 hours non-stop.

As their heavy-weight 70-ton aircraft took off, everything was fine.

At about 10,000 feet of altitude, one of their engines malfunctioned and they were obliged to shut it down. After burning enough fuel to reach the maximum allowed landing weight, they prepared their attempt to land safely.

Multiple fire trucks lined up on the side of the runway to be able to hose them down in case they crash-landed. And usually, that’s a great idea.

To land safely, the pilot in the cockpit was supposed to activate the left rudder to counter the force from the one active engine. But when they touched down, the pilot activated the wrong rudder.
