Rodney Reeder had been loading massive pieces of steel all week at the dock south of Seattle. The steel piling weighed fifty tons.
It was July 2017, and the summer heat made the work even harder.
At 80 degrees, sweat dripped down his face as he rigged each four-foot-wide beam to the crane.
They were short two workers that day. It was extra duty for everyone left. After lunch, Rodney climbed up the steel ladder to help lower another piling into place. He checked his watch, and it was turning 1 o’clock.
Then everything changed in an instant.
Something hit the barge, maybe a tugboat or another vessel.
The impact jarred the steel ladder away from the stack. Rodney found himself separated from safety, twenty-five feet in the air.
Time slowed to a crawl, as if he were watching a movie in slow motion. Everything became crystal clear.
His body had turned toward the ground as he fell. But he reached desperately for the steel beam in front of him, feeling the rough rust particles under his gloves.
