Back in the 90s, dentists used laughing gas to numb their patients.

And Lani Leary, not having been exposed to any drugs before, didn’t know she was allergic to any medication. So, on the day of her appointment, the dentist administered laughing gas to start what was supposed to be a routine procedure.

Then, Lani quickly went into anaphylactic shock.

*Anaphylactic shock: The immune system releases a flood of chemicals that can cause the body to go into shock. Blood pressure drops suddenly, and the airways narrow, blocking your breathing.

One moment, Lani was on the dentist’s chair; the next, she was hovering near the ceiling.

When Lani became unconscious, the dentist was panicking and immediately engaged in his protocol for resuscitating patients.

Up near the ceiling, Lani was trying to tell him that everything was okay, that she was fine.

She looked at her body with detachment.
