Two separate heads of state from developing nations have recently, and very publicly, called out the Global North’s double standards regarding climate change and wildlife conservation.

First, the president of Guyana had a viral moment with a BBC interviewer. Responding to a question about carbon emissions from his nation’s offshore oil and gas operations, President Irfaan Ali gave a defiant response about Western hypocrisy.

Then, the president of Botswana responded to criticism from the German government regarding the trophy hunting of elephants. President Mokgweetsi Masisi declared that if Germans care so much about elephants, then they should “live together with the animals, in the way you are trying to tell us to.”
