Strategic Approach in Job Posts
Many companies’ leaders and marketing managers have dedicated staff for strategy formulation. It is a very important process for the company, as it tells the future direction which the company has to take, and the way that the company can succeed.
In today’s volatile market, it is no longer useful for recruiters to attract and hire talent with a desultory mindset when filling open positions without considering internal and external factors as a strategic plan to matching people to jobs.
The 10 Schools of Thoughts by Henry Mintzberg tell us how Strategy formulation can be done, and what are the various ways that you can formulate a strategy.
Here, I am going to review a few job posts and describe them in relation to Mintzberg Schools of Thought;
Content Strategy Manager, Ads Content Strategy at Facebook
Companies like Facebook may have adopted The Entrepreneurial School of Thought since its early stages, putting all the focus on the CEO of the company. Where employees trust their leader Mark Zuckerberg, who have grown his company to astounding proportions due to his leadership skills and his people follows whatever he says in this strategic process.
Since the CEO in the Entrepreneurial School of Thought needs to be visionary, and has to have a strong leadership skill, and the right judgement and direction, this strategy has been proven right in very few cases over the years where the leaders were legendary by themselves.
One can also look at Facebook following the Cultural School of Thought with its flat organization that values internal collaboration and communication; simply because Facebook has a fantastic capital in terms of its human and social capital, creating a positive culture and direction!
In this job post “Content Strategy Manager, Ads Content Strategy”; one can look at it as an application of Cultural School of Thought- by hiring a highly collaborative Content Strategy Manager to lead content strategists working in one or more of Facebook feature areas, and helping guide the success of the team through coaching, goal setting and building relationships with cross-functional stakeholders in a flat organization.
Since Cultural School places an emphasis on social values, beliefs and culture in decision making, this job post requires flexibility and creativity the manager should undertakes his/her duties in a way that is authentic, objective, empathic and inspiring with a refined management approach that helps people develop their strengths and make an impact, and recognize when to adapt leadership styles to match people’s unique needs in different situations.
Technical Product Manager — Contact Center Technology at Toyota
Toyota is growing and leading the future of mobility through innovative, high-quality solutions designed to enhance lives- they look for team members who want to “Dream. Do. Grow. with us.”
Toyota uses differentiated targeting strategy for manufacturing and selling its offerings as per the customer segments and improve the customer satisfaction.
Value-based and user benefit positioning strategies are used by the company for highlighting the functional benefits of the offerings of the company. This strongly refers to the “The Positioning School of Thought”; whereas the process of strategy formulation, the management decides that they want to position the product at the top of the mind and makes decisions accordingly.
Customer Interest tops the list of priorities for Toyota, and hence, they have a research center totally dedicated to gathering data on the consumer expectations from Toyota. By 2005, they had invested 22.2 million in their research center, which also places an emphasis on applying the “Cognitive Model” of Mintzberg, wherein, you can better your business by understanding your customers. It is a mental and psychological process to find out what is in the minds of the consumer and how do we improve on that or use that information.
Once you know customers perception and thought process about you, you can change the same with strategy. You can either improve or you can communicate better so that your customers have more information about you.
Reporting to the Senior Manager the person in this role will support the Future Society & Mobility Vision department’s objective to become a provider of mobility services, and to understand how society and human behavior will evolve over the next several years.
The management has to determine the competition already present in the market, and where is their own company positioned, using tools like Five forces, Value chain, BCG matrix and others to position its products. Once the market has been analyzed, the right strategy is needed to improve the positioning of the product.
Today’s recruiters must become more deliberate in who they hire by having a tactical plan to attract and retain the most qualified people in the unpredictable global market, by developing a framework model, strategic foresight competencies required to match people to jobs.
Overall, when recruiters match talent based on the company’s strategic drivers rather than blindly fill open positions without a tactical plan, organizations can better achieve its performance potential.
