What I Treasure — Ragleth Hill
The Shropshire hill where I reconnect with the world
It’s not mine, and it’s there for anyone to use, but whenever I use it, I often have it to myself. Which is why I treasure it as my hill.
As Shropshire peaks go, Church Stretton’s Ragleth Hill is not the highest (it’s 398 metres or 1,305 feet), the most rugged (Caer Caradoc looks the part), or the most touristy (that accolade goes to the Long Mynd on the other side of the valley). But what it lacks in claims to fame it makes up for in the wonderful experiences it gives me.
When I climb Ragleth, it transports me to another era. Having left the high-tech world of my desk, with its Zoom meetings and fast broadband connection to anywhere on the planet, Ragleth Hill carries me to one of Britain’s best, unspoiled landscapes. From here, the views stretch across South Shropshire and the Welsh Borders.
