The 2018 Copa del Rey quarterfinals provided some thrillers and shocking results in the last week.
The most surprising result was Leganes advancing past Real Madrid. Los Blancos took a 1–0 away goal advantage into the 2nd leg at the Santiago Bernabeu but were unable to keep Leganes from scoring two goals and were eliminated on away goals after a 2–2 aggregate. The shocking defeat adds more failure to obtaining a trophy in what has been a very disappointing season under manager Zinedine Zidane.
Leganes will face Sevilla in the next round and are the only side left in the tournament who have never won the Copa del Rey.
Sevilla started the scoring early in their 2nd leg match at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium against Atletico Madrid with Sergio Escudero finding the net 26 seconds into the match. They cruised past Atletico 3–1 with 5–2 aggregate. This will be their second semi-final appearance in three years. Los Rojiblancos last won the Copa del Rey in 2010 for their fifth title and lost to Barca in the 2016 final. Sevilla will be favorites in the two legs against Leganes.
Barcelona advanced after defeating Espanyol 2–0 in the 2nd leg with a 2–1 aggregate. Philippe Coutinho made is club debut but was subbed in the 66th minute. Barca will face-off with Valencia in the semi-finals. The Blaugrana have won the Copa 29 times and are clear favorites to make it 30.
Valencia defeated Alaves in a thriller that led to penalties. Los Che have won the Copa del Rey seven times and are playing quality football this campaign. They could be a difficult out for Barcelona.
The first legs of the Copa del Rey semifinals kickoff this Wednesday and Thursday with the second legs scheduled for Feb. 5.
