Series: 5-A-Side & The USMNT III

The 5-A-Side Series will be a weekly look at 24 and under USMNT lesser known prospects or known commodities, broken down into defenders, midfielders and forwards. Balance is key and this week we focus on; Matt Miazga, Tommy Redding, Lynden Gooch, Emerson Hyndman and Jeremy Ebobisse.

Matt Miazga: 21 (D)

Matt Miazga is a Chelsea youth player currently on loan at Chelsea II aka Vitesse in the Eredivisie. Matt Miazga got his start in the RBNY academy before making 34 senior team appearances over three seasons. A breakout performance in the 2015 U-20 World Cup saw him earn a move to Chelsea in January 2016, before promptly being shipped to the Netherlands on August 31, 2016. Miazga is great in the air and a superb tackler. Natural instincts and quality in short passes make the young center-back a prime prospect. In 28 appearances this season he also has 1 goal and 2 assists. Current market value: €1,500,000.

Tommy Redding: 20 (D)

Tommy Redding is a young player for Orlando City SC of the MLS. Another grad of the IMG Academy, Redding got his move to OCSC in 2014, at that time only part of the USL. US Soccer promotion/relegation politics aside, Redding burst onto the scene last season getting 16 appearances for the MLS outfit. His recent season earned him a place on the 2017 US U-20 team. A confident dribbler, Redding also likes to get his body in the way of shots. He still is rough around the edges and could work on tackling and his aerial game. Current market value: €400,000.

Lynden Gooch: 21 (M)

Lynden Gooch is a young midfielder for Sunderland AFC of the Premier League and a product of the Sunderland academy. Gooch finally broke into the Sunderland 1st team this season under the guidance of David Moyes. Previously he saw sparing minutes on loan at Doncaster Rovers and Gateshead. Naturally deployed as a wide player he has a killer ball from set pieces and crossing. His season hit a bump in November when he picked up an injury that sidelined him for over two months and he has struggled to get back into Moyes’ 1st team but continues to feature for the reserves in the Premier League 2. Current market value: €750,000.

Emerson Hyndman: 20 (M)

A product of FC Dallas and Fulham FC youth academies, Hyndman broke into the Fulham side at just 18 years old and became a squad player before furnishing a move to Bournemouth in the Summer of 2016. The former USMNT U-20 captain is seen as a project for Eddie Howe who loaned him to Rangers in January, and since then has been on fire. In 11 appearances for the Ibrox team he has 4 goals and 3 assists. Arguably one of the best passers of the ball in the US player pool with superb holding play and added goal threat its only a matter of time before Hyndman cements his place in the US roster. Current market value: €1,000,000.

Jeremy Ebobisse: 20 (F)

Having featured for Duke University for two seasons from 2014–2015. Concurrently during his stint at Duke he featured for D.C. United development U-23 side. Ebobisse has made the most of his opportunity with the US U-20 team, scoring 9 goals in only 8 appearances. Ebobisse has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, a real goal paocher, and hopes to impress Caleb Porter sooner rather than later. Current market value: €150,000.
