The best matchups for the Champions League quarterfinal draw.
The remaining eight clubs in the Champions League quarterfinals are Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Leicester City, Monaco and Real Madrid. Now we have to wait and see the pairings.
These draws always bring up conversation about ideal matchups and the most favorable for the clubs and the fans. I decided to play along and picked the four matchups I believe would be best for everyone.
A Madrid Derby for the culture!
There’s a lot of bad blood here. We’ve seen these two clubs face-off in two of the last three Champions League finals with Real Madrid coming out on top each time winning la Décima and la Undécima. Both matches came to extra time and had thrilling endings. This quarterfinal matchup would open the possible match up of a El Clásico or Barça vs Atlético semifinal, and both of those scenarios would be very tasty for football fans.
Bayern vs The Old Lady: Part Two
The last time these two squared up Bayern Munich had to fight back from being two goals down and scored twice in extra time to beat Juventus 4–2 sending them through to the last eight with a 6–4 aggregate victory. What makes this matchup intriguing are the players that were once on the other club. Kingsley Coman was on loan from Juventus and ended up scoring Bayern Munich’s fourth goal. Arturo Vidal is another former Juventus player that now features for Bayern. The world needs to see a rematch and maybe we’ll get another 10 goals out of it.
Goals on Goals on Goals on Goals
This matchup has all the technical skill and counter attacking football you could ask for! Dortmund are a fast attacking machine and Barça are patient assassins. These two paired up would undoubtedly result in copious amounts of goals and a side order of penalties. Aubameyang, Christian Pulisic, Ousmane Dembele and company would love to “shock the world” by defeating the mighty Barcelona FC. Barcelona are coming off the greatest comeback in Champions League history against PSG and I believe Dortmund could give them another scare. Messi, Suarez and Neymar are deadly, but their midfield and backline have played up to their class. This is a beautiful matchup could be a shootout.
Battle of The Homecoming Queens
Who doesn’t want to see the two surprise clubs of the competition this year? Monaco have incredible young talents like Kylian Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Tiemoué Bakayoko, Thomas Lemar, Benjamin Mendy and more. They play brilliant attacking football and lead all European clubs in goals scored. Leicester City are the true Cinderella team of the Champions League and are the only Premier League team remaining but ask any team remaining if they would want to face them right now and most of them would probably say they would like to avoid Leicester City. They are unpredictable in that basic 4–4–2 formation and seem to have found great chemistry this time of the season. You can’t play down to their level or they will hurt you. At this point, they are a team playing with nothing to lose, as they have already shocked everyone making it this far. This is probably the most unpredictable matchup.
The Champions League quarterfinal draw will take place on March 17 at 7:00 a.m. ET.
