St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious feast to honor the patron saint of Ireland. But, as waves of newly arrived Irish immigrants brought the tradition to the United States, starting in the 17th and 18th centuries, the solemn day of commemoration transformed into a secular holiday celebrating all aspects of Irish culture.

These days, revelers eat traditional foods, like corned beef and cabbage, while downing pints of Guinness or drams of Irish whiskey in crowded pubs adorned with shamrocks and green decor galore.

While those notoriously raucous festivities certainly can be fun, it’s not for everyone. And, if you’re planning to observe the holiday at home, there’s no need to stick to the conventional norms.

This March 17, we suggest swapping out the green beer for an elevated, Emerald-hued cocktail instead. From a classic Grasshopper or Last Word to newfangled creations, like the Grinch, here are 24 green drinks to shake up this St. Paddy’s Day.

Jameson Triple Triple Mint Sour

Ingredients

2 Parts Jameson Triple Triple

3/4 parts lemon juice

3/4 parts simple syrup

Mint leaves and lemon wedge for garnish

Method

Pour everything into a shaker with ice. Shake, pour, garnished with lemon and mint and enjoy!

Casamigas Spicy Verde

Ingredients

1.5 oz. Casamigas Jalapeño Tequila

.75 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

.5 oz. Simple Syrup

4 Basil Leaves

2 Cucumber Slices

1 Dash Scrappy’s Fire Tincture or 1 Jalapeño Slice

½ Thick Rim Equal Parts Salt/Sugar/Tajín® Mixture

Garnish Large Basil Leaf and Jalapeño Slice

Method

Wet ½ rim of a small rocks glass with lime wheel or wedge then dip into salt mixture. Combine all ingredients into a tin shaker. (Muddle jalapeño and fine strain if using.) Add ice, shake vigorously and fine strain into rimmed rocks glass. Add fresh ice and garnish.

Scottish Coffee

Ingredients

1.5 oz Johnnie Walker Black Label

1.5 oz Espresso or Cold Brew Coffee

0.75 oz Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur

0.25 oz Cinnamon Syrup

Method

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker, add ice, shake and strain into a chilled glass coupe or mug and garnish with shaved cinnamon using a microplane.

Ingredients

3 scoops homemade Baileys Irish Cream ice cream

Guinness Beer

1.5 oz Jameson Irish Whiskey

Method

Place three generous scoops of homemade Bailey’s ice cream into pilsner glass

Carefully fill the remainder of the glass with Guinness Beer

Pour 1.5 oz of Jameson Irish Whiskey into shot glass, which can be enjoyed as a float or accompaniment

Serve with straw(s)

Irish Gold Brew

Ingredients

2 oz Irish brown butter-washed Roe & Co Irish Whiskey

0.75 oz Giffard Banane

1.25 oz Cold Brew

3 drops Saline Solution (20%) or Pinch of Sea Salt

2 droppers Mole Bitters

Vanilla Cold Foam:

3 Tbs Heavy Cream

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Brown Butter-Washed Roe & Co

5 oz Brown Butter (Irish Butter)

750 ml Roe & Co

Method

Melt Irish butter in a pan over medium heat until browned (5–10 min). Remove from heat and combine with Roe & Co in a sealed container. Shake gently every 10 min for 1 hour. Freeze until butter solidifies, then strain through cheesecloth to remove solids.

Add brown butter Roe & Co, Giffard Banane, cold brew, saline or pinch of salt, and bitters into a mixing glass. Stir and strain into a Glass Mug.

Froth heavy cream with vanilla extract and pour over the cocktail.

Green Machine Gin & Juice

Ingredients

1.25 oz Tanqueray London Dry Gin

3 oz Green Juice

Method

Build 1.25 oz of Tanqueray London Dry Gin and 3 oz fresh Green Juice over ice in a rocks glass. Stir and garnish with a mint sprig.

“Pot of Gold” Margarita

Ingredients

1.5 oz DELEÓN Blanco

0.5 oz Vanilla Syrup

1 oz Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice

3 Pineapple Chunks

Method

Muddle pineapple chunks into the glass. In a shaker, combine DELEÓN Blanco, vanilla syrup and lime juice. Pour into a rocks glass, top with a sugar-coated pineapple triangle, and lightly torch before serving.

Cucumber Clover

Ingredients

2 oz Seedlip Garden 108

0.75 oz Simple Syrup

0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice

3 Cucumber Slices

5 Mint Leaves

Method

Muddle cucumber slices & mint leaves in a cocktail shaker. Add Garden 108, simple syrup & lime juice to the shaker with ice. Shake & double strain into a coupe. Garnish with a cucumber ribbon.

*Simple syrup: mix one part water to one part sugar.

Celtic Limonata

Ingredients

1.5 oz. CÎROC Limonata

2.0 oz. Lemonade

1.0 oz. Sparkling Wine

Method

Add all ingredients to a wine glass and gently stir together, then garnish. Top with club soda, lemon wheel, and fresh mint garnish

Emerald Ginger Zing

Ingredients

1.5 oz. Old Parr Aged 12 Years

3 oz. Premium ginger ale

Method

Fill a highball glass with ice, pour Old Parr Aged 12 Years. Top with premium ginger ale, add a squeeze of orange, stir and garnish with an orange wedge

Green Shamrock Bloody Mary

Ingredients

1.5 oz Buchanan’s 12-Year-Old DeLuxe Blended Scotch Whisky

1 oz Fresh Cucumber Juice

1 oz Fresh Apple Juice

.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

.75 oz Simple Syrup

1 Dash Hot Sauce

1 Dash Worcestershire Sauce

Fresh Cucumber Slice For Garnish

Fresh Celery Stalk For Garnish

3 Fresh Cherry Tomatoes For Garnish

Method

Combine Buchanan’s 12-Year-Old DeLuxe Blended Scotch Whisky, fresh cucumber juice, fresh apple juice, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce into a cocktail shaker with ice.

Shake well. Strain contents into a Highball glass over fresh ice. Garnish with fresh cucumber slice, fresh celery slice, and 3 cherry tomatoes.

High Rye High Five

Ingredients

2 parts Redemption High Rye Bourbon Whiskey

¾ part Lemon Juice

¼ part Rich Simple Syrup

Seasonal, Regional Fruit

Method

Muddle fruit of choice in a shaker tin. Add bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice. Shake until chilled and diluted. Double strain into a rocks glass with ice. Garnish with chosen fruit.

High Rye Sunrise

Ingredients

2 parts Redemption High Rye Bourbon Whiskey

6 parts Blood Orange Soda

Method

Add Redemption High Rye Bourbon and blood orange soda over ice in a highball glass. Garnish with a half moon blood orange slice.

Rosemary Lemon Ginger Fizz

Ingredients

2 parts Redemption High Rye Bourbon

¾ part Lemon Juice

6 parts Ginger Beer

Method

Combine all ingredients into a highball glass with ice. Gently stir. Garnish with a rosemary sprig.

The Glendalough Shamrock

Ingredients

10–15 sprigs of Mint & Basil Leaves

4 parts Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey

1 part Chartreuse

1.5 parts Simple Syrup

2 parts Lemon Juice

1 part Verbena Tea (strongly brewed, cold)

Method

Intensely muddle or blend the mint and basil leaves with simple syrup in the bottom of a shaker. Add Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey, lemon juice, verbena tea and Chartreuse. Fill the shaker with ice and shake well. Fine strain over a large square ice cube in a ribbed tumbler. Garnish with Irish shamrocks or mint sprig.

Redbreast Irish Whiskey’s ‘Treetop Sour’

A lighter, more vibrant whisk(e)y sour with Redbreast 12-Year-Old, served up to showcase its elegant, aromatic profile.

Ingredients

50ml Redbreast 12-Year-Old 20ml Fresh Lemon Juice 20ml 1:1 Sugar Syrup

15ml Egg White

2 Orange Bitters

Method

Add all ingredients to a shaker and shake without ice for 5 seconds.
Then add ice and shake hard for 10 seconds.

Double strain into a chilled coupette glass and garnish with discarded lemon coin & grated nutmeg

Espolòn Tequila’s Green with Envy

Ingredients

6 parts espolòn tequila blanco

1 part wray and nephew® rum

2 parts ancho reyes verde chile liqueur

16 parts green apple juice*

4 parts basil simple syrup**

3 parts lemon juice

Garnish
Sliced green apples, basil leaves, sliced serrano peppers

Method

Add all the liquid ingredients into a punch bowl and mix to incorporate. Add garnish into the bowl and top with ice.

Glass
Punch bowl, small glasses & ladle

*Using a juicer, juice green apples directly into the lemon juice to keep their bright and fresh color. If you don’t have a juicer, you can use a blender and then pass the mixture through a fine mesh strainer.

**Basil simple syrup
16 oz hot water
2 cups white sugar
6 large fresh basil leaves

Method

Combine hot water and sugar, stirring until all the sugar is dissolved. allow the mixture to cool in the fridge. once it’s cold, add basil leaves to the simple syrup. using either a blender or an immersion blender, blend the basil with the syrup for about 1 minute. strain out all the solids.

Zacapa Matcha Old Fashioned

Ingredients

1.5 oz Zacapa №23

0.25 oz Matcha Syrup*

2 dashes Orange Bitters

Matcha Syrup

1 tbsp of Ceremonial Matcha Green Tea Powder

2 cups water

2 cups cane sugar

Method

Add matcha to the pot, then sugar.

Whisk together to mix, then add water.

Bring all to boil in a sauce pan. Stir gently so as to break up the matcha. Then reduce heat and stir for about 3 minutes.

Let cool then pour into glass jar. Keeps in the fridge for about 2 weeks.

Pour Matcha Syrup in Old Fashioned glass and saturate with the Orange Bitters and Zacapa Rum.

Then fill the glass with ice cubes (or one large cube) and stir gently.

Garnish with an orange twist.

Shamrock Sour

Ingredients

1 oz Tequila

2 oz Hampton Water Rosé (still)

0.5 oz Fresh Lemon Juice

0.5 oz Agave (or Simple Syrup)

1 Egg White

2 oz Hampton Water Bubbly

Garnish: Lemon Peel, Angostura Bitters

Method

Add all ingredients except the Hampton Water Bubbly into a shaker tin with ice and shake. Strain into a highball glass with ice. Top with 2 oz of Hampton Water Bubbly.

Note: Cocktail should have a thicker egg cream texture that just begins to flow above the glass, but keeps shape. Garnish with lemon peel on top of glass or 3 dashes of angostura bitters in a pattern.

HOPWTR’s Shamrock Spritz

Ingredients

3 oz Fresh Pineapple Juice

½ oz Agave

¼ oz Sweetened Ginger Juice

3 Drops Liquid Chlorophyll

Topped With Lime HOP WTR

Method

Add everything to a shaker tin except the Lime HOP WT. Shake all of the ingredients with ice and strain into a glass over fresh ice. Top with Lime HOP WTR and garnish with mint and a lime wheel.

The People’s Margarita

Ingredients

2 oz. Teremana Blanco

0.75 oz. Lime Juice

0.5 oz. Agave Nectar

1 oz. Pineapple Juice (to taste)

Method

Shake with ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime wheel, pineapple leaves & sea salt (as desired).
