The Lagos Floods of 2011: the story of a bottle, a shower and a fish.

Remember this guy, Noah?
See how angry he is?

You remember why, don’t you?

Well, it goes like this. Once upon a time, he was told to tell some people about a flood that was coming, and that those people should prepare. They laughed at him, and well, you know how that went.

Flash forward to 2000 years later, and we have this guy, smiling.

Why? Because he told us so too.

This is Muhammad Sani-Sidi, the D.G of NEMA, (National Emergency Management Agency) and like Noah, he foretold of rain, fire and brimstone.

Actually, just about the rain.

And we didn’t listen either.

But in July 2011, Lagos State had one of the worst floods it had ever seen in years. It was not that floods hadn’t happened in Lagos before, but this was on a different level.

There was water, water everywhere.

Even social media was awash, (get it?) with the news of the floods.

Why did it happen? Well, this is a map of the major drainage systems of Lagos State, and this is someone who should know, telling us what happened.

Basically, he said this happened

Because this keeps happening…

And if we keep doing that, this could happen

But we probably wont care until this happens:

Think about it today, instead of polluting with plastic, wouldn’t you rather do this:

And to be really poetic, here is one use of plastic bottles even the fish wont mind.

Grumble like you mean it. Will only trust laughers who squint. ....oh, and everything in life is better with garlic-butter.
