While reporting and drawing this piece, I thought a lot about what it means to lose one’s possessions. I kept coming back to how important my own books are in my life—I swear I can remember when and where I read each one. They speak to who I was at each stage in my life, and I wonder, if I lost them, would I lose that part of myself?

Hurricane Sandy brought destruction of all kinds in its wake. This is just one of the thousands of stories from the storm…
