The Big, Big List of Indie Publishers and Small Presses

150+ proofs that indie is beautiful.

The Nonconformist Authors
Sep 14 · 30 min read

You’ve finally placed the long-awaited full stop at the end of your manuscript. You’ve done all the things the writing handbooks instructed you to do, and scrupulously followed every single bit of writing advice you’ve encountered on the Web. You’re now ready to see your beloved novel become a bestseller. You’re more than convinced that it’s polished and edited enough to earn the coveted title of the debut of the decade.

However, before you reach the moment when you’ll have to make a decision which book award to receive in person, you have to find an appropriate publisher for your work. And it may prove to be as challenging and daunting a task as composing it was in the first place.

But what should you do if you’re reluctant to turn to the “Big Six” book publishers (or the “Big Five”, or whatever digit follows the “Big” part these days) for fear of being reduced to a dehumanized and saleable commodity that is left at the mercy of their marketing departments and sales managers having little, if anything, in common with artistic expression and sensibility? What should you do if you’re looking for a team of dedicated and passionate editors eager to invest their every second in the promotion of your book and not merely treat it as yet another survivor of the fathomless slush pile?

Then, you should definitely go indie.

There are simply too many big lists of publishers; and so, to remedy that, we introduce our ever-growing Big, Big List of Indie Publishers and Small Presses accepting unsolicited submissions from writers.

On your mark. Get set. Submit!

The following list consists of indie publishers big and small, long-established and recently founded, yet all of them looking for great writing. They are listed in alphabetical order; their descriptions come from their websites or social media profiles.

If you’d like to suggest an indie publisher or small press that should be included on this list or suggest an edit, e-mail us at: contact [at] nonconformist-mag.com

You may want us to account for the absence of several well-known and widely respected independent publishers from our list. The most important criterion of admission was accepting unsolicited manuscripts directly from writers (even if the particular publisher was temporarily closed for submissions at the time of compiling the list in order to work on their backlog).
