There is a common stereotype that all Asian parents want their kids to grow up to be doctors, which simply isn’t true. Some Asian parents also are okay with their kids pursuing law, engineering or finance as well. But the overall preference is for their star child to blossom into a residence surgeon, or at least that’s how hundreds of K-Dramas brainwashed us to believe.

This obsession stems from a systemic aura that doctors have cultivated in eastern cultures for hundreds, if not thousands of years. In dynastic times, China was land of lawless looters living between loopholes. There was corruption up high, and poverty down low. Education was reserved for the far and few, and would often result in political positions clouded by immorality and opportunity. Enter, the Doctor — a revered man of study, sacrifice, and healing. Doctors were like super monks, because the Chinese society has always valued wisdom and knowledge in addition to tranquility and calm. They healed the sick, the poor, and the broken while dedicating their lives to the studies of herbs, roots, and animal parts. This stereotype, that doctors are somehow impartial to bullshit and corruption, are pure of heart and possess a saviour persona is somehow…
