A Beginner’s Guide to Crypto Gaming
Ready to venture into the world of crypto gaming? Let’s get you started.
Let’s say you are a lifelong gamer. Since childhood, free time for you has meant sitting in front of a screen, playing games. You played World of Warcraft in college while your friends went out drinking. When you got your first paycheck after graduating, the first thing you thought to use it on was to build your own computer. You’ve played every genre and every platform, even if just to say you’ve tried it. Now, a new gaming world is on the horizon, and it’s piqued your curiosity. But you have no idea where to start. Don’t worry — I can help you with that.
As a newcomer to cryptocurrencies and crypto games, I was pretty clueless myself. The news cycle is filled with stories about Bitcoin and the blockchain, but none of it was really helpful. Everything was just either trying to hype it up or knock it down. But what I was looking for was a starting point. So I decided to venture out into the wilderness of YouTube and Reddit, and see where it would take me.
The first step of the process, as I found out, is to have some moolah in the form of a cryptocurrency. Most of the current crypto games are based on the Ethereum blockchain, so you will need to purchase Ether to play them. You’ll need to use a cryptocurrency exchange platform to convert your money into Ether, and there’s plenty of exchanges to choose from. Pick the one that is best for you based on your needs — for example, your country’s currency or the payment method you want to use. Don’t rush this step! Research an exchange before you choose it to make sure it’s right for you.
Once you’ve got your Ether, much like when you withdraw cash from the ATM, you’ll want to keep it somewhere safe. In this case, a digital wallet. Think PayPal or Apple Wallet, except they’ll be storing keys instead of actual currency. As with exchanges, there’s quite a few wallet solutions out there that let you store keys on your desktop, on the cloud, on your mobile, or even offline using a hardware device. Again, pick the one that suits your specific needs. BitGuild has its own wallet, with which you’ll be able to buy and display game items and equipment.
The final step in your crypto gaming journey is choosing a game to play. The industry is very much in its infancy, so most games are in their alpha or beta stages. Expect to see bugs and be ready for a bumpy gaming experience. On the flipside, though, you’ll become part of the community that is helping developers figure out what works best and what players want to see. That’s an exciting experience in and of itself.
So what kind of games are out there on the blockchain? Let’s start with the most popular title so far, which is arguably the one that put crypto games on the map for mainstream masses — CryptoKitties. The mechanics are as easy as it gets: you buy and raise a digital cat, sort of like a Tamagotchi. Your cat is unique and will be owned by you in perpetuity unless you decide to sell it. You can also breed it with another user’s cat to create a new kitten that will carry some of your cat’s attributes. The value of your cat can go up or down, depending on the market. The most expensive CryptoKitty so far was sold for roughly $117,000 USD, but don’t worry — you can buy one for as little as 20 bucks.
If collectible cats aren’t your thing, there are other games on the blockchain for you to explore. In Crypto Countries, you can channel your love of Risk to buy countries and dominate the world map… until you’re beaten by a higher bidder, of course. If a game like Pokémon is more your style, check out CryptoBots, Ethermons, or Chain Monsters, where you’ll be able to enhance, train, and fight your creatures aside from selling and trading them.
Keep in mind that most of these games have a ‘collectible’ element to them, and perhaps that’s not what you are looking for in a playing experience. But this is only the first generation of crypto games, so there’s literally no telling what the future will bring. And that’s what makes it so compelling for a lot of people — being at the threshold of a new gaming frontier.
Every player’s experience is different, and we all have our own priorities. Like with any genre, crypto games won’t be for everyone. But part of the fun is exploring and tinkering and opening your mind to new gaming possibilities. So go forth, my fellow gamers, and dip your feet in the crypto gaming pond. It’s nice and warm, I promise.
