Dev Spotlight: CryptoDungeons

A look into the first exclusive partner game on BitGuild

At BitGuild, it’s important for us to work with indie developers that are willing to challenge themselves and create unique experiences on the blockchain. That’s why we were thrilled to add CryptoDungeons—a brand new RPG experience on the blockchain—to our growing portfolio of games.

The game is an ambitious project with a lot of potential for growth and might even be the purest RPG game we’ve seen in the blockchain world in terms of its base mechanics. We talked to Angelo Neves Bastos, Front-End Developer at CryptoDungeons, and found out why this game is set to change things for RPGs.

Tell us a little bit about your team. Where does your story start?

We are a small team of developers from Portugal that is always seeking new adventures. In the beginning, we were a developing team/task management solutions to some medium-sized companies here in Portugal.

In mid-2017, we started looking at the Ethereum network and were fascinated by the complexity behind it. Because we like to develop in new technologies, we began making some simple contracts to start interacting with the network. After that, we saw an opportunity to make a pure RPG game — and now here we are!

You’ve mentioned that you draw inspiration from classic RPG games such as Final Fantasy. How does such an experience translate into a blockchain game?

Yes! We love turn-based games, and it’s perfect for blockchain technology! The game has more inspiration from World of Warcraft and the Final Fantasy series, although the pixel art style is something that our team loves. We always liked the idea of progression and accomplishment, and Ethereum network brought a solution that is perfect for turn-based games.

When did you first start working on CryptoDungeons, and how has the project evolved over time?

We started working on CryptoDungeons in late 2017. Since then, the game has been tested by a lot of players in the test net. In the beginning, we were making contracts that couldn’t scale as intended, so after a couple of months, we made a new approach in the contracts to allow us to scale at will.

CryptoDungeons is capable of extending the gameplay the same way a game releases a major content patch or new DLC. Also, these early months were perfect to analyze what we needed to modify to make a balanced game.

In the test net we got all these features tested:

• Store (Buying Heroes)
• Auction House (Buying/Selling Heroes and Items)
• Crafting (Craft items and equipables that will help heroes in their adventures)
• Quests (Were players gather items)
• Dungeons (3 Heroes vs 3 NPCs)

You’ve decided on launching your game exclusively on the BitGuild Portal. Could you tell us what motivated you to make this decision?

We want to make it as simple as possible to play our game. Just like nowadays a player will seek new games on a platform like Steam, we want to be a part of the next big gaming platform in Ethereum. We need to be aware that basically all Ethereum games are browser games, and if we look 15 years back, a player that would want to play browser games would seek them in a platform like Miniclip or ArmorGames. BitGuild represents this solution in the current market and we had no doubts that this was the best decision for us.

Any plans for the future? What can players expect from CryptoDungeons in the coming weeks/months?

A week after CryptoDungeons hits the main net, quests and crafting will be available. We will reward players that craft specific items (an announcement will be made detailing this). After that, players can expect dungeons where they’ll need to send their heroes equipped with their best items to these dangerous dungeons (don’t worry — you won’t lose anything if you die).

Dungeons are already tested but we will work on making them in a side chain so that players don’t need to worry about the cost of sending heroes to dungeons.

After this, we will also make an open world game where players can interact with each other and discover new places.
