We are now more digitally connected than ever. While the benefits of increased digital interaction are undeniable, the rise in cyber crimes, online violence, and cyberbullying necessitates a proactive approach to online safety.

Ensuring online safety is no longer a cliché phrase dressed up to sound sophisticated; it has become an undeniable reality that demands our attention and action. It is thus imperative to understand the scope of online safety and its implications for individuals, particularly vulnerable ones.

This article will guide you through Understanding what online safety means and implies while providing you tips on how to stay safe online

Globally, over 33% of young people were reported to have experienced some form of bullying online, with Girls 1.3 times more likely to be bullied. In the second quarter of 2023, over 14% of all YouTube comments were taken down because they were related to harassment and bullying.

These patterns can be seen in almost all digital platforms available, and the numbers underscore the severity of the issue and emphasize the need for proactive measures

We could go on and on about the reality and statistics around one of the major conversations of the century and a consequence of the Digitization of the world, but that does not solve the problem.

One thing that can however contribute to ensuring everyone stays safe online, is helping individuals understand the online landscape and collectively fostering a culture of digital responsibility.

How can you stay safe online?

The first step to doing so is realizing that your safety is Priority. So, in your dealings and interactions, that consciousness should be a guide. Exclude yourself from conversations and interactions that put you at risk of being bullied and jeopardise your safety.

Secondly, protect your personal information. You can do this in many ways — using protected passwords, keeping some information like your address and other sensitive information private, using a Two-factor Authentication method, carefully screening links, amongst others. This will ensure your information is not in the public and at the disposal of cyber bullies.

Finally, stay alert and informed. Ask questions where necessary, keep yourself informed of trends that may be harmful to you, and carefully exclude yourself from them.

Staying safe online isn’t just about avoiding scams. It is about protecting your privacy, managing your digital footprint, and making informed choices in a constantly evolving landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned web surfer or just starting on the internet, these fundamental safety tips can empower you to navigate the internet with confidence
