Conformity Versus Individualized Learning

Many people argue that conformity is a focus in school as well as the fact that students are forced to learn the same way.

How is the educational system in the U.S?

Each student has their own strengths and passions, which can cause problems with the current education system. A class usually has around 20–30 students, therefore, it is unlikely that every student in those classes are benefiting from the pace in which teachers are giving their lessons.

While one student may be bored because they’re a fast learner and have already understood the material, another student could be lost because they learn at a slower pace. Unfortunately, what ends up happening is that the child who learns at a slower pace than the rest will be labeled as a failure.

The foundation of a basic skills-oriented education program is known as reading, writing, and arithmetic. These basic skills are vital for every student to learn, but having a broader and diverse curriculum would allow a student to explore different fields until they figure out what they enjoy doing.

Having a more individualized learning experience has a greater impact than standardized learning because it fosters a sense of natural curiosity towards a child’s true passion. Once a student has understood the basic core materials such as writing and reading, their natural curiosity would lead them focus on courses that interest them.

Teachers are a very important to the success of their students. A teacher’s job includes passing knowledge and understanding onto the new generation. Therefore, good teachers try their best to teach students in an organized and effective way that resembles the school’s planned curriculum. However, great teachers are those who try hard to not just improve students’ grades but to also help develop students into great individuals.

So, what is a great teacher?

A great teacher can be described as also a mentor to a student whom will focus on stimulating a student to achieve their full potential. Having a teacher that focuses on the development of their student will lead to children being engaged in class, develop good habits, and encourage to go beyond their supposed limits.

Is there a solution?

While it is unlikely that the education system in the entire United States can be changed in order to meet these common issues, technology could be the key to a more individualized learning experience.

Steve Jobs once quoted, “…the computer is the most remarkable tool that we’ve ever come up with. It’s the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds.

Technology gives us the chance to take matters into our own hands and innovate in a way that would better our circumstances. We can create the tool that would help expand our minds in a personalized way.

It has been stated that a more individualized learning system would allow students to learn at their own pace and have a better chance to learn about their passions. Innovators that focus on education technology (EdTech) are now offering solutions that transform how learning is done.

Ruangguru is a “one-stop learning company founded in 2014 in Asia that has developed a mobile app that have videos and practice tests on various subjects as well as access to a standby tutor. This app allows students to have the individual help that they need at their own pace.

Education technology can’t replace person to person learning, but it can offer assistance outside of the classroom that would allow students to catch up, get ahead, or learn other subjects not offered in the classroom. Creating more options for learning will make sure that students will get the personalized help they need while learning in their own way.

Choosing your own path

As small children, we were not given the choice to choose how and what was taught by teachers. As those small children grew, they started to question the way the system was run and wondered if school was truly benefiting them as a person.

Tony Robbins once said “Identify your problems, but give your power and energy to solutions.” That is why people have taken advantage of technology to create a way for others with these same doubts to learn in a way that would help make them into the individuals they want to be. Whether its extra help with homework with an educational social network cite or getting a tutor through an app, people are now taking a stand by creating their own system that work works especially for them.
